Capcom vs Konami - Beat 'em Up Showdown (part 2)

Updated: Aug 2, 2023

Capcom vs konami montage
1989 was a heck of an year!

1989 was really a decisive year for beat 'em ups. While the year started kind of slow with games that, while great for the time, weren't impressive enough, by November things really started to change. Capcom and Konami, acting synchronized again, decided to release bombastic games at the arcade. On November 15th, the world was introduced to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and 10 days later Capcom released Final Fight. Two juggernauts facing each other. On one side, a game that revolutionized beat 'em ups with its huge sprites, gritty atmosphere, and impeccable combat while on the other, colorful graphics, amazing soundtrack, and four players simultaneously. Not to mention the Turtles themselves, who by that time were almost at their peak popularity.

Last week we confronted the two first releases from both companies, with Konami getting the first place with its amazing Crime Fighters with 56% of the votes. This time, the fight looks way tougher.
